Comfrey Symphytum officinalis

Here is a plant you should all know!
It makes a very smelly brew that's

Good for the garden!
And the chooks love it in moderation.

A Photo A Day - No. 57

Kangaroo Apple Solanum aviculare

Although the fruits of this native plant are edible when fully ripe
all other parts a quite toxic.

But the chooks leave it alone and wait for the fruit to fall!

I don't eat the fruit but have heard it makes a tasty chutney.
Being related to tomatoes I guess that makes sense.

Nonnie's Giant Arugula (Salad Rocket)

Grows very quickly here and bolts to seed fast.

Along the way it flowers for adding to salads.

These flowers also attract beneficial insects like this Ladybird

"Sweet days of summer, the jasmine's in bloom...
Summer breeze makes me feel fine
Blowing through the jasmine in my mind"
(Lyrics by James Seals; music by James Seals & Dash Crofts, 1971)

The wonderful scent of Jasmine
If we need a reminder of summer, it's here!

African Daisy - Osteospermum
I started off with white and purple,

All sorts of different colours are coming up now.

They are tough plants over here;

So tough that we now have warnings about them escaping from gardens.

They seem to cause problems for stock animals,
so I don't grow as many as I would like to.

As some of you thought No.30 was Rhubarb here is the real thing...
Not a very red one.
This one survives our heat better.

But tastes just as good as the redder one that struggles in my garden.
Grown in a tyre for winter warmth
And shade for summer cooling!!!

3.2.07

A Photo A Day - No. 34

Garlic Chives
Allium tuberosum
These little toughies survive our heat better than onion chives.
Their leaves give a mild garlic flavour to foods.
All parts are edible including leaves, flowers, bulbs and seed (sprouted).
